Japan's Keio U Goes Campus-Wide with The MathWorks

Keio University in Japan has gone campus-wide with its use of mathematical computing software from The Mathworks. The faculty of science and technology located on the Yagami Campus has been the principal user of a number of MatLab and Simulink products alongside other department users such as medicine and economics. The expanded license, which covers total academic headcount (TAH), enables the university to manage product use on campus computers centrally rather than through individual departments and campuses.

MatLab is computing language and interactive environment for algorithm development, data visualization, data analysis, and numeric computation. Simulink is an environment for multidomain simulation and model-based design for dynamic and embedded systems. The combination of products allows the user to develop algorithms; analyze and visualize simulations; create batch processing scripts; customize the modeling environment; and define signal, parameter, and test data.

"I am pleased that Keio University has acquired the TAH license for MatLab and Simulink products," said Jun Murai, a professor with the faculty of Environment and Information Studies. "Having the command of numerical analysis, modeling, simulation, and analytical tools on computers is a vital building block to intellectual activity. It is my hope that the acquisition of the TAH license will infuse the entire university with new strength and vigor."

The university had about 43,000 students as of 2007, the last publicly reported count.
