Richmont To Use Landro To Analyze Intern Counseling Sessions

Richmont Graduate University will begin using the Landro Education Edition video play analyzer from Iris Technologies this fall to improve student learning in mental health counseling. Richmont is a Christian professional counseling graduate school with campuses in Atlanta, GA and Chattanooga, TN.
Landro is a presentation system for the study of video, which has primarily found use in the analysis of sporting events to improve player performance. The user captures activity with a video camera to the computer, then marks highlights in the video with the Landro software. This tagging process lets the user catalog the digital files by category, such as a particular technique or behavior to be studied and analyzed later.
In the training of counselors, Landro allows student practitioners the opportunity to review their own clinical sessions, identifying effective techniques and analyzing those that require additional practice.
"The student will then be able to efficiently identify learning areas to discuss in supervision," said Ron Bunger, associate director of libraries at Richmont. "Supervisors will be able to ask students to identify their use of various techniques. Student videos will also be analyzed for empathy since that is a special area of emphasis and research in our [quality enhancement plan (QEP)] process."
Bunger said that use of the Landro system will allow efficient review of hundreds of hours of video of interns that would otherwise overtax the ability of clinical supervisors to adequately review. "Now supervision will include video clips of actual sessions that will highlight questions the student or supervisor may have: 'At this point I was uncomfortable about...'; 'How did you begin your session?' 'Present examples where you responded to your client's visual clues....'"
