Joliet JC Adds Capella to Transfer List

A community college in Illinois has added an academic partnership with one of the world's largest online universities to its transfer options. Students at Joliet Junior College will be able to transfer credits and receive reduced tuition from Capella University, a for-profit institution that specializes in online degree programs for working adults.

Both schools have similar enrollment numbers. The two-year college has about 38,000 students at three campuses and two extension learning centers; Capella has about 37,000 students in 53 countries.

"This partnership illustrates the necessity of two-year and four-year college partnerships to be responsive to the learning needs of today's students," said Gena Proulx, president of Joliet Junior College. "We can no longer assume that students will travel to our campuses--we must meet them at their choice of a learning location."

The Joliet institution has a number of academic partnerships with other non-traditional universities, including Kaplan and DeVry, Lewis U, and Franklin U.

Capella said in a statement that it has alliances with a quarter of all community colleges in the United States. Both institutions are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
