Genetec Releases Small Site Video Surveillance Appliance

Genetec, a physical security vendor, has released a new network security appliance for small environments. The SV-16 is pre-loaded with Genetec's IP-based video surveillance software, Omnicast, and is intended for use in either remote sites or installations with 16 or fewer cameras.

The appliance, which weighs less than a pound, supports wireless connectivity, offers up to 500 GB of internal storage with the possibility of adding more external storage, and consumes a modest 6 watts of power.

The appliance is designed for installations where customers need a stand-alone recording system or want to do video recording in remote locations or for the management of cameras over a wireless network. The SV-16 works with cameras from multiple vendors. To handle upgrades to new camera drivers, Genetec offers "hardware integration packs."

The company said that to simplify licensing, it will allow customers to purchase the number of licenses they need initially and add additional licenses as the system expands. When the camera count grows over 16, the customer can choose to trade in the licenses for what it calls "traditional server-based storage."
