Mobile Data Use Growing, But Users Still Uncertain About Security

While data consumption continues to rise--owing to the growing number of consumers purchasing smartphones and tablets--mobile device users are still wary about the security of their data, according to a new report released Monday by Oracle.

The report, "Opportunity Calling: The Future of Mobile Communications--Take Two," is based on responses from more than 3,000 mobile phone users surveyed about their mobile phone habits, perception of mobile devices, and expectations for service providers and new technologies.

Mobile users are devouring data, the report found. This is hardly surprising given that 69 percent of those surveyed report that they own a smart phone and that nearly half (47 percent) said that they have increased their data use over the last year. Survey results suggested that this data trend will likely continue, thanks to mobile applications and tablets.

Fifty-five percent of respondents have downloaded a free app. While only 16 percent of respondents reported that they own a tablet, 41 percent reported plans to purchase one over the next 12 months.

Mobile users are also expecting more from their devices. Forty-three percent of respondents have replaced their camera, 34 percent their MP3 player, and 24 percent their GPS device with their mobile phone. Retail activity is up as well. Respondents reported that they comparison shop (31 percent), read reviews (24 percent), and scan QR codes (14 percent) on their device.

Yet even as mobile activity grows, consumers remain cautious about the security of their data. Sixty-eight percent of respondents reported they do not believe, or are uncertain, that the information stored or transmitted from their mobile device is secure.
