Integrated Captioning Platform Aims to Meet Rigorous Accessibility Requirements
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) recently deployed a custom integrated course captioning platform. The new service was designed to address the "accessibility and learning requirements across the RIT student body, including students from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID)," according to a statement released today to the press.
RIT partnered with caption service provider Automatic Sync Technologies (AST) and Ensemble Video to develop the platform. The institution first mapped the video content management system to its workflow, then added AST captioning tools. The AST tools were already included in RIT’s captioning services. RIT’s new system includes a caption format customization capability, including specialized color, sizes, and backgrounds, designed to meet NTID use standards.
Ian Webber, senior manager of Academic Technology and Media Services at RIT, credits the new platform for improving efficiency of its captioning services. "There is no corner cutting here,” said Webber in a prepared statement issued by the companies, “and the fact that Ensemble developed the custom integration with AST and streamlined the platform to handle our high volume of captioning is a massive time saver for us.”
