Coursera, Chegg Partner To Provide Free Textbooks
Massive open online course (MOOC) provider Coursera has partnered with Chegg to launch a pilot program that will provide Coursera students free electronic versions of textbooks from Cengage Learning, Macmillan Higher Education, Oxford University Press, Sage, and Wiley.
Delivered via Chegg's Web-based e-reader, textbooks and other digital materials will be available to students for the duration of their course.
"We recognize the importance of forging partnerships with other stakeholders in the education space in order to help students overcome barriers and evolve the way they access education," said Coursera Co-Founder Daphne Koller, in a prepared statement. "By collaborating with publishers, we are able to provide access to some of the world's best resources to Coursera students, supporting our goal of learning without limits."
For their part, participating publishers will have the opportunity to gain "insight into worldwide usage data" and sell their textbooks "to students for continued personal learning," according to a news release about the program.
