EdR To Offer CampusMD Service to Residents

EdR, a company that owns and operates 71 campus housing communities, will offer its 40,000 student residents access to the CampusMD nationwide telehealth service.

CampusMD is a subscription-based service that provides 24/7 access to board-certified and licensed physicians by phone, online video, or secure email. Students will be able to speak with a physician located in their state, and the physician can diagnose and treat more than 500 common illnesses and, in appropriate instances, prescribe medication.

CampusMD also includes a Campus Counselors program that provides CampusMD subscribers with 24/7 access to experienced Masters-level counselors. The counselors can help students with emotional, academic, and other concerns by phone, online video consultation, or secure email.

The CampusMD online video service is accessible through iPad, iPhone, and Android mobile devices, as well as through any computer with a webcam and browser.

According to a spring 2013 survey conducted by the American College Health Association, 54.3 percent of undergraduate students had been diagnosed or treated by a health professional in the preceding 12 months, and the most common health problems included allergies, back pain, sinus infections, and strep throat. The survey also found that stress, sleep difficulties, anxiety, the common cold, flu, and sore throat were the most common factors affecting student academic performance, resulting in lower grades, disruption of studies, and dropped classes.

"When a student is sick and living away from home, finding a doctor can be confusing and inconvenient," said Scott Casey, senior vice president of strategic business development and chief technology officer for EdR, in a prepared statement. "Now any of the more than 40,000 residents of our collegiate communities can subscribe to CampusMD's services and be just a click away from a video consultation with a physician."
