New Dell Thin Client and Infrastructure Support Windows Server 2012 R2 and vWorkspace

Dell has introduced a new data center solution and thin client that support Windows Server 2012 R2 and vWorkspace.

According to the company, the Dell Wyse Datacenter for Microsoft VDI and vWorkspace combines some of the company's existing data center infrastructure solutions into "a single, end-to-end Hyper-V based desktop virtualization solution." It's designed to help organizations create a centrally hosted virtualized environment, so end users can access data and applications as if they were running locally. It supports most endpoint operating systems including iOS and Android, so it is suitable for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environments. Meanwhile, the single management console is designed to simplify application and system support and security for IT staff.

Key features of the Dell Wyse Datacenter for Microsoft VDI and vWorkspace include:

  • Support for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1 and Intel Ivy Bridge processors;
  • Support for Microsoft RemoteFX remote desktop protocol (RDP), with support for a broad range of RDP 8.0 features;
  • Support for personal desktops with a persistent profile;
  • Unified communications support with the Microsoft Lync 2013 VDI plug-in for Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 8 endpoints;
  • Virtualized shared graphics using AMD FirePro S9000, S7000 and W7000 server GPUs;
  • New VDI features for Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services including support for iOS, OS X and Android endpoints;
  • Enhancements through RemoteFX, DirectX, quick reconnect and visual application appearance; and
  • Optional Dell vWorkspace 8.0 MR1 desktop virtualization software for expanded client support, legacy applications and operating systems, and performance monitoring.

The new Dell Wyse thin client desktop 3012-T10D supports Citrix, Microsoft, VMware and Dell vWorkspace virtual desktop infrastructure. It runs on ARM system-on-chip (SoC) architecture with the Dell Wyse ThinOS operating system. According to the company, it boots in less than nine seconds and features "out-of-box automatic setup, configuration and management."

Key features of the Dell Wyse 3012-T10D include:

  • Marvell PXA2128 1.2 GHz dual-core ARM SoC processor;
  • Microsoft RemoteFX (RDP) certification, including support for a broad range of RDP 8.0 features;
  • Optimized Citrix HDX receiver;
  • Dual DVI ports, four USB ports, gigabit Ethernet and optional dual band WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n with up to 300 Mbps connection speeds;
  • Built-in media processor for multimedia, bi-directional audio and Flash playback;
  • Multiple management options, including cloud-based management with remote imaging through the Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager service and enterprise management with the optional Dell Wyse Device Manager; and
  • Flexible mounting options.

The Dell Wyse Datacenter for Microsoft VDI and vWorkspace and Dell Wyse thin client desktop 3012-T10D are available now. Further information can be found on Dell's site.
