Sloan Consortium Renames Itself the Online Learning Consortium
To better reflect its mission of advancing the quality of online learning worldwide, the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) has changed its name to the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). Now a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) member-sustained organization, OLC announced its new name at this week's Blended Learning Conference & Workshop in Denver.
"Our organization's reach and impact has grown significantly since Sloan-C was first conceived in 1992," said Kathleen Ives, Online Learning Consortium acting chief executive officer and executive director, in a prepared statement. "Almost two decades later, and now a self-sustaining organization, the time has come to rebrand as we move into new markets worldwide."
Sloan-C was originally funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, noted Joel Hartman, president of the OLC Board of Directors, in a press release. "The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation was the forward-looking benefactor that fueled the development of online learning in American higher education. As the Online Learning Consortium, we honor this heritage with a commitment to evolve the organization to continually address the needs of our members and the online learning community worldwide."
OLC counts member institutions from 49 states and 14 countries. Consortium members will continue to have access to the same community, publications, research, programs, conferences and other resources provided through Sloan-C membership.
