U Colorado To Help Fortify Defense Department Networks

Northrop Grumman, which does defense work for the United States government, has given $70,000 to the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs (UCCS) to support research into securing Defense Department networks. The College of Engineering & Applied Science will run a nine-month pilot project bringing students and faculty together to work on the cyber protection research.

The college runs a sizable data center specifically for security-related work. In January the university was selected as a Northrop Grumman "core partner," which brings financial support from the company for STEM programs, internships for students, guest lecturers, career fairs and job opportunities. At that time 52 other institutions were also part of the program.

"The integration of students and faculty into real-world research is critical to the academic mission of UCCS," said Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak. "The opportunity for students to have this experience with an industry partner is so important to their future success."

Northrop Grumman has 2,000 employees in the state, including 500 in the Colorado Springs area.
