Optometry School Enhances Academics With Video Capture

One of the oldest optometry schools in the United States is taking advantage of one of the newest video capture technologies available.

Ever since Marshall B. Ketchum University in Fullerton, CA, remodeled its lecture halls last fall, it has been using a video creation and management program, Mediasite by Sonic Foundry, throughout its campus.

After moving back into its renovated academic facilities, the university implemented the new Mediasite, a cloud-based lecture capture system that integrates with Moodle, its learning management system. Faculty members can now record their presentations, edit and share them with students almost instantly. They also have access to desktop recorders that allow them to create and share videos, lectures and assignments from and to any device they or students want to use.

"And we are able to generate for individual faculty members specific reports that show which segments of their lectures are being reviewed by students multiple times," said Ketchum University Multimedia Services Director Matt Breneman. "This level of feedback provides faculty with the opportunity to adjust their lecture content to either speed up or go into additional detail in response to visible lulls and spikes on the lecture timeline."

As a result, since the beginning of the academic year last fall, they have created more than 1,100 videos with 1,753 hours of content that have been viewed 52,000 times.

"The on-demand delivery has helped students receive content in a way that better corresponds to their individual learning styles," said Academic Affairs Associate Dean Ray Chu.

Along with the optometry school, Ketchum University is also home to the Southern California School of Physician Assistant Studies and will open a College of Pharmacy in fall 2016. Ketchum’s Southern California College of Optometry was founded in 1904 in Los Angeles and moved to its Fullerton campus in 1973. It is the third oldest optometric program in the country.
