New University of Missouri Lab Explores Emerging 5G Technologies

A new innovation lab at the University of Missouri will focus on developing 5G devices and applications and exploring new use cases for the technology in a variety of fields. The institution partnered with AT&T to outfit the research and teaching space with full 5G+ millimeter wave capability as well as collaborate on curriculum and project-based coursework.

The lab will connect students and faculty with industry expertise for interdisciplinary work. For example, a course is being developed around the use of kiosks and immersive technologies to help reduce anxiety in the campus community and improve mental health. Other areas being explored include using 5G to enable remote surgeries and creating immersive journalism through augmented reality.

"Bringing 5G to Mizzou's emerging technology lab and campus will further enable students to explore new experiences, solve complex problems and create new ideas to change the world," noted Anne Chow, CEO for AT&T Business, in a statement.

"With this new lab on campus, ideas can quickly transfer from experimentation to implementation," said Bimal Balakrishnan, associate professor of architectural studies in Mizzou's College of Human Environmental Sciences. "It opens a lot of doors for students to go beyond state-of-the-art and it pushes us into emerging technology well ahead of many other schools."
