Google's Course Kit Mashes Google Docs and Drive with the LMS

Today's College Students Shy Away from Face-to-Face Advising

While 44 percent of college students would like their coaching to be one-on-one in person, according to a recent survey, more collectively would prefer other modes, including e-mailing (18 percent), online via videoconference or texting (both at 11 percent), via personalized college app (10 percent) and by social media (6 percent). The survey was done jointly by Civitas Learning, an education technology company, and the Center for Generational Kinetics, a Millennial and Gen Z research firm.



U.S. Lags in Wage Equality for Women in Tech

According to a new data collection project, the list of best countries for female undergraduates in the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines doesn't necessarily include the United States, which comes in eighth in terms of the gender pay gap in the tech fields. On average, men make nearly 12 percent more than women, a difference that hasn't varied much since 2010. The project was undertaken by Honeypot, a European company representing tech talent.

Rice University has intoduced a new program geared toward working adults looking to bone up on their data science skills. The 24-week Data Analytics Boot Camp was developed in partnership with workforce acclerator Trilogy Education.

Want to Make Students Happier with Learning? Use More Video

The majority of people in education believe that video usage on campus increases student satisfaction with their learning experiences; more than nine in 10 respondents (92 percent) said just that to a recent research project on the topic. The survey was done by Kaltura, a company that sells products and services for capturing, creating, managing and hosting videos.

Independent Research Commission Makes Facebook Data Available for Academic Study

Social Science One, an independent research commission formed to give scholars a way to conduct research about private industry data, is kicking off its first project: analyzing Facebook data to better understand the role of social media on elections and democracy. The organization comes out of an initiative Facebook announced in April in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, to make its data available for academic research while protecting the privacy of its users.

Panopto Updates Video Platform; Drops Captioning Pricing

Panopto has updated its video platform and dropped the pricing of its video captioning services. The application, originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University, now has expanded functionality for video management, editing, analytics, quizzing, curation and interactivity.

Digital Badges Initiative to Support Professional Development in Washington State

The Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges is teaming up with software development company Concentric Sky on a digital badging initiative that will use Badgr digital badges to document professional development accomplishments of faculty, administrators and staff across the system's 34 institutions.
