Southern U Beefs up Tech for Career Services
Baton Rouge's Southern University is building a new multi-purpose technology center to beef up the abilities of its Career Services Center.
The new services in the center will include virtual interviews, designed to allow for greater flexibility in scheduling and eliminate travel constraints and costs for both employers and job candidates, and remote training.
The center will also "support and improve existing career-development workshops, internship programs, leadership seminars, professional development courses, student employment sessions, networking events, mock interviews and group training sessions conducted by the university's business and industry partners," according to a news release.
Funding for the center comes in part through a $25,000 donation from BASF, which employs approximately 2,000 workers in Louisiana, to purchase AV equipment, furniture and other accessories.
"BASF is joining forces with Southern University to use technology to expand career opportunities for students and modernize the job-search process," said Tom Yura, senior vice president and general manager of a BASF site in Geismar, LA, in a prepared statement. "The new technology center also will strengthen recruiting efforts for BASF and other companies by increasing our access to graduates whose skills match job openings in our industries."
