U North Carolina Chapel Hill Expands Mobile App Functionality with User Experience Platform

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has implemented a user experience platform that enabled information technology services (ITS) staff to expand the functionality of its CarolinaGo mobile app for students.

The university launched CarolinaGo in 2014 as an information-only app, but the university wanted to expand the app's functionality to support student life on campus. The updated app is powered by PeopleMobile, a user experience platform developed by GreyHeller that lets people access PeopleSoft pages from any smartphone or tablet. Students can now use the CarolinaGo app to access the university's ConnectCarolina portal.

Features of the updated CarolinaGo app include:

  • Adding, dropping and swapping classes;
  • Viewing weekly student schedules;
  • Viewing grades;
  • Viewing and requesting an official transcript;
  • Applying for graduation; and
  • Viewing financial aid or reporting aid from other sources.

The app is available for Apple and Android devices. According to Kate Hash, manager of ITS communications for the university, students are embracing the added functionality. "Up until Friday, our largest download month had been 600 downloads of the app. On Friday alone, we had 2,000," she said in a news release. "It is clear that ConnectCarolina is adding value to the app and that the students are now discovering the app because they want to use ConnectCarolina."
