Nonprofit Receives $1.5 Million to Promote Latino Student Achievement

In an effort to accelerate Latino student success in higher education, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. has received $1.5 million to advance awareness and implementation of effective, evidence-based practices and expand strategies for Latino students.

The Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation, an educational philanthropy, and the Lumina Foundation, a private foundation committed to increasing the number of individuals with credentials in the United States, have each awarded $750,000 to Excelencia in Education. Since its launch in 2004, the nonprofit has conducted extensive research and launched several initiatives that serve Latino students.

“Increasing Latino degree completion, while enrolling more Latino students in colleges and universities and closing the existing equity gaps in attainment, is the focus of this work,” said Sarita Brown, president of Excelencia in Education, in a statement.

Excelencia in Education will use the grants to collaborate with leading Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) “to develop acceleration plans for Latino student college completion, and work with Emerging HSIs to expand use of data and evidence-based practices to improve student success,” according to a news release.
