Motivis Updates Competency Ed Platform

Motivis Learning is launching the second iteration of Unity, its learning relationship management system designed strictly for competency-based education, Unity 2.0.

Motivis Learning, a spinoff first developed at the University of Southern New Hampshire in 2014, is an online social networking tool and software platform that allows institutions — K-12 and higher education — to create private branded communities that their students, faculty and administrators can use to connect and collaborate.

To students, Unity appears to be more like a social network than a traditional learning management system. After logging in, students immediately see an activity feed showing them the current status of their projects, goals and feedback from instructors. A column on the right side lists connections and a to-do list. A bar along the top tracks progress toward mastering competencies.

In the system's "back office," faculty members and administrators have access to a stream of data about what students do inside the system — everything from assignments they have turned in to surveys they have answered and the amount of time spent with academic coaches.

In addition to that, Unity 2.0 will now:

• Have an integrated case management system that allows users to create, edit comment on and close cases;
• Integrate an institution's style guide to customize every page with logos, images and colors; and
• Keep users up to date on campus activities on a new homepage that, along with the pre-existing activity feed, will provide upcoming events, current news and a Twitter feed.

"We have redesigned Unity from the student's perspective so that institutions can deliver an online community that matches that of an on-campus community," said Motivis Learning CEO and Founder Brian Peddle. "Unity helps students stay connected to their institution from the time they apply all the way through to becoming an alumnus."
