Proctorio Adds New Plagiarism Detection Tools with Canvas Integration

Remote proctoring company Proctorio has added two plagiarism detection tools to its Learning Integrity Platform. Both features — Originality Verification and WebSweep — have been integrated into Instructure's Canvas learning management system, allowing institutions to streamline exam integrity within the LMS.

Originality Verification scans students' work for similarities across the internet and detects anomalous images, symbols and characters that may indicate an academic integrity issue. If the system finds suspicious text, it provides a source link for the instructor to determine whether the material has been plagiarized. In addition, the system requires test-takers to sign a "pledge of originality" as part of the student authentication process.

WebSweep scans instructors' test questions to detect whether the questions can be found on the internet. Potential matches are flagged for instructors, so that students can be prevented from copying quiz answers from existing online material.
