Academic Success Metrics during Fully Online Instruction

When the University of Alabama at Birmingham moved to a fully online course delivery model in Spring 2020, University leaders were interested in student engagement metrics. Prior to COVID, at least 50% of UAB students had already taken at least one online class.

However, the move to fully online instruction required a detailed analysis of Canvas. Data availability through Tableau, Canvas Data, SIS and technology vendors, provided opportunity for tracking key metrics for Canvas courses in order to help with student success.

Measuring student course activity, number and types of assessments helped determine how students were engaging with content, and provided a better understanding about the factors that contribute to academic success. Using the subscription feature and Tableau Server, Tableau Dashboards were created and shared with Deans and Chairs to improve transparency around academic success metrics.
