Demystifying the DoD’s Cybersecurity Mandate
In 2021, the U.S. government spent nearly $19 billion on cybersecurity—with almost half of that funding allocated for the Department of Defense (DoD). That spending is meant to protect government agencies from costly, and potentially dangerous, data breaches. But when protected data leaves the secure enclave of the federal government and is shared with researchers, partner institutions, and other third-party vendors, it introduces brand new risks. The DoD hopes to solve this problem with its new Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program.
In September 2020, the DoD announced the first iteration of the CMMC framework, which requires any organization any organization that works closely with the DoD (and similar government agencies) to enhance its cybersecurity protocols.
