Flagler College To Take Historic Buildings Wireless

Flagler College in Florida will deploy a wireless network throughout its campus in an effort to preserve the integrity of the historic buildings on the school's site and to provide centralized security for its wireless users. Alcatel-Lucent will handle the implementation.

Though Flagler has only been a college for about 39 years, its campus includes historic buildings, which the college has spent $43 million restoring, as well as adding new buildings. The main building on the campus, Ponce de Leon Hall, is a national historic landmark.

"Flagler has pledged the preservation and use of these historic and architecturally unique campus structures. As a result, wireless local area networking is a great option for us," said Joe Provenza, director of technology services at Flagler, in a prepared statement.  "We are installing WiFi all over the campus, including the dormitories, our library, and more, to give students and faculty secure access with the most modern wireless technologies available. The 700-plus students in the dorms won't need to use their own wireless access equipment, making it easier and cheaper for them, and taking away some of the security management headache for us."

The college will use Alcatel-Lucent's OmniAccess WLAN switches and access points to provide coverage for the entire campus.

Flagler College is a four-year independent institution located in St. Augustine, FL. It serves a little more than 2,000 students currently.

ChatGPT creator OpenAI is backing a California bill that would require tech companies to label AI-generated content in the form of a digital "watermark." The proposed legislation, known as the "California Digital Content Provenance Standards" (AB 3211), aims to ensure transparency in digital media by identifying content created through artificial intelligence. This requirement would apply to a broad range of AI-generated material, from harmless memes to deepfakes that could be used to spread misinformation about political candidates.
