VMware Releases Fusion for Mac
VMware has released Fusion for Mac OS X. The software, based on VMware's desktop virtualization technology, allows Apple's Intel-based systems to run software written for multiple OSes simultaneously.
Unlike Apple's Boot Camp, Fusion doesn't require a reboot to run Windows. Rather, it allows Windows applications (and applications written for other OSes) to run within the Mac OS X environment as if they were native applications. Some of the features include:
- Support for 32- and 64-bit Windows and Linux operating systems;
- Support for Apple GUI technologies, including the ability to launch Windows applications from the Dock and switching between Mac and Windows applications using Exposé;
- Drag and drop and copy/paste between Mac and Windows documents;
- Support for multi-core computing using VMware Virtual SMP technology; and
- "Experimental support for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in Windows XP virtual machines," including DirectX 8.1 applications.
VMware Fusion is available now for Mac OS X for $79.99. It requires an Intel-based Mac and Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later. A Core 2 Duo or Xeon processor is required to run 64-bit operating systems.
