CUNY Adopts Oracle for FIRST Project

City University of New York (CUNY) is revamping its administrative systems, consolidating a wide array of student information, human resources, and financial systems as part of its Fully Integrated Resources and Services Tool (FIRST) project. The university system, which comprises 23 institutions serving more than 430,000 students, will integrate its data using Oracle's PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions 9.0, for which Oracle will also provide hosting and consulting.

CUNY's FIRST project aims to consolidate information from across campuses--which include 11 senior colleges, six community colleges, and six other adult, graduate, and other institutions--and multiple departments into a single database. The system has been, to date, using a variety of legacy systems, some of which, according to information released last week, are as old as 25 years.

According to information from Oracle, CUNY is using PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions 9.0, which includes Enterprise Financial Management, Human Capital Management, and Campus Solutions, and Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware technology. It's also deploying PeopleSoft Enterprise Performance Management, PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal, PeopleSoft Enterprise Learning Management, and the Oracle User Productivity Kit, which will be hosted through Oracle On Demand.

CUNY is also using the Financial Aid module to "automate financial aid packaging to reduce the time necessary to deliver offers."

Said Ron Spalter, deputy chief operating officer and co-project leader, "It was significant to us that Oracle offered CUNY the Oracle Insight program, which we refined to focus on a high profile area for CUNY students--financial aid.  We are working with Oracle to frame, analyze and resolve a number of outstanding opportunities in this area."
