OLW Comes to Live@edu

Microsoft has rolled its Office Live Workspace technology into Live@edu, the company's portal, communications, and collaboration suite for higher education. According to Microsoft, this is but the first in a "new wave" of Office Live services making its way into the higher ed space. The Live@edu service itself has also been upgraded to provide greater storage capacity and additional features.

Office Live Workspace is a Web-based feature of Microsoft Office that allows for collaboration and sharing of documents. Its integration with Live@edu means that users can upload Office documents through the service and set permissions for others to view and collaborate on documents, including instructors and other students.

Microsoft indicated that several colleges and universities have signed on to test the service through the Office Live Workspace University Early Adopter Program, including including Ball State University, DeVry University, Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Indiana University, Kentucky Community and Technical College System, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, the University of Pennsylvania, Rio Salado College of the Maricopa Community Colleges, University of Washington, and Vanderbilt University.

In related news, Microsoft has also upgraded the Live@edu service to provide 5 GB of e-mail storage space (up from 2 GB), and 1 GB of storage space (password-protected). It's also added enhancements to e-mail, including whitelisting (which prevents specified e-mail addresses from being caught by the spam filter) and automatic e-mail reply.
