  • Plagiarism May Be Rife in Higher Ed Applications

    Plagiarism appears to be endemic in applications, according to a recently published study by iParadigms. The company examined 453,000 applications submitted to institutions of higher ed and found that 44 percent of the personal statements contained matching text and that 36 percent contained significant matching text--suggesting, according to iParadigms, plagiarism, collusion, or the use of recycled or purchased documents.

  • Education Coalition To Expand Pennsylvania Broadband Project

    The Keystone Initiative for Network-Based Education and Research (KINBER) is embarking on a statewide initiative to increase delivery of broadband throughout Pennsylvania. Known as the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network (PennREN), the project has attracted about $130 million in combined federal and private funding. KINBER is a coalition of Pennsylvania colleges and universities, research and healthcare organizations, and economic development entities.

  • Hillsborough CC Launches First Campus Card Program

    After a five-year delay, Hillsborough Community College in the Tampa Bay, FL area will be introducing its first multifunctional identification card. The college will be using Heartland Payment Systems' Campus OneCard to launch the "Hawk Card" to provide the campus community with a cashless mechanism for accessing services on and off campus.

  • Mississippi State Students Design Android Phone Games

    A dozen students in Mississippi are working with a cellular carrier to develop smartphone games that will eventually end up in the Google Android Market. The students, enrolled in a game design class at Mississippi State University, are working with Cellular South to create computer games for the HTC Hero.

  • U Wisconsin Pilots Virtual Student Union

    The University of Wisconsin-Extension has opened a virtual student union as part of its sustainable management program, where students can chat with each other and connect with employers and faculty online. The site is a pilot program to evaluate how well the platform can eventually serve all students seeking online degrees through the university.

  • MIT Launches iPhone App

    The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has joined other institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Texas, and Duke University in promoting its MIT Mobile app through Apple's App Store.
