UK University Deploys Open Source Video Platform for Teaching and Learning

The University of Warwick in the United Kingdom has plans to roll out an open source video platform for its Language Centre. The platform will include a video extension for the Moodle learning management system (LMS) and a custom video portal.

"Video is becoming a critical part of learning and teaching," said Teresa MacKinnon, senior tutor for e-learning at the university's Language Centre, in a prepared statement. The university decided it needed to "take advantage of this new medium" and use it in the Language Centre's programs, according to MacKinnon.

The university will deploy the Kaltura open source video platform. Components of the deployment include Kaltura's video extension for Moodle and a custom video portal based on Kaltura's MediaSpace video portal application.

The Kaltura video extension for Moodle is an out-of-the-box plug-in that lets Moodle users upload, publish, and share video, audio, documents, and images directly from the (LMS), according to information on the Kaltura site.

The Kaltura Mediaspace video portal application is an out-of-the-box video portal that lets educational institutions create a "campus YouTube" to publish custom video content or to let the user community upload and manage media independently, according to information on the Kaltura site.

"Kaltura's seamless integration with Moodle and its MediaSpace video portal allow us to offer our faculty and students with a myriad of new ways to communicate and collaborate," said MacKinnon in a prepared statement.

The University of Warwick is a public research university located in Coventry, England, serving nearly 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students and employing more than 5,000 faculty and staff.
