Pearson Updates Tutoring Service with Dashboard iPad App

Pearson has updated its Smarthinking on-demand tutoring service in an effort to improve online learning outcomes for individuals and institutions.

The service's Smarthinking reporting dashboard now provides data about how students are using the service, the ability to generate reports for efficacy studies, results of student surveys and more. "Institutions can leverage this intelligence to determine best practices for online tutoring implementation models to maximize the positive impact on student retention and success," according to a company news release.

Other new features include:

  • An iPad app for increased access to tutors;
  • Notifications, delivered via text message, for upcoming appointments or to let students know that their writing has been reviewed; and
  • A voice-enabled whiteboard.

"At St. Petersburg College, we use data to inform the decisions we make on a daily basis, especially when it comes to ensuring student success," said Joseph Leopold, St. Petersburg College's director of learning resources, in a prepared statement. "The new Smarthinking dashboard provides me easy access to valuable data that, on a weekly basis, allows us to provide early alerts to faculty, to follow and react to academic support trends and to plan for subsequent terms. All of this information and analysis helps us maximize our support of students and our investment of resources."
