Blackboard Joins Internet2

Blackboard is joining nonprofit education technology consortium Internet2.

"As part of the Internet2 NET+ initiative, Blackboard will work closely with representative Internet2 members to explore advances in learning technologies when delivered over the advanced Internet2 network, develop and customize solutions for use by Internet2 member campuses, and support the alignment of those services with the needs of instructors, students and administrators," according to a news release. "The community-validated education services will be delivered on the advanced Internet2 Network and leverage InCommon federated authentication and other community middle ware assets."

Internet2 comprises 252 universities, 82 corporations, nearly 70 affiliate members, such as government agencies, 41 education networks and "more than 65 national research and education networking partners," according to the organization's site.

"I'm thrilled that Blackboard is joining this community of institutions, researchers and thought leaders who are passionate about education," said Mark Strassman, senior vice president of product management at Blackboard, in a prepared statement. "We look forward to collaborating to mutually shape the future of technology and its potential to transform education. Being a part of the conversations happening in the Internet2 community will be another valuable resource to us as we continue to develop solutions that reimagine education."
