Oracle Sun Ray Virtual Desktop Software Gets Improved Networking, Multimedia Playback

Oracle has released an update to its cross-platform virtual desktop software, Sun Ray Software 5.2. Sun Ray software provides access to Windows, Oracle Linux, or Oracle Solaris virtual desktops from Sun Ray Clients or Mac OS X, Windows, or Linux computers. The latest version of Sun Ray Software gains simplified installation and configuration, as well as improved video, audio, smart card, VPN, and network resiliency.

Virtual desktops enable centralized management and are designed to reduce operational costs while enhancing security in some areas. Operating system, application software, and memory management are all controlled from the server side, which simplifies maintenance. Data is also stored on the server side, which can reduce the risk of compromising sensitive information if a computer is lost or stolen. Sun Ray Software provides user authentication and encryption between the client and server, further enhancing the security of the system. It also provides "hotdesking" capabilities, so users can access their active desktop environment session from different client computers.

Key features of Sun Ray Software 5.2 include:

  • Secure access to server-hosted virtual desktops;
  • Access to Windows, Oracle Solaris, and Oracle Linux server platforms;
  • Desktop session mobility between Sun Ray Clients, PCs, and laptops;
  • Smooth multimedia playback with Adobe Flash and Windows Media Player;
  • Bidirectional audio between Sun Ray Clients and Windows, Oracle Solaris, and Oracle Linux servers;
  • Real-time voice with optimized audio delivery;
  • Support for USB peripherals connected to Sun Ray Clients; and
  • Support for up to 32 displays with Sun Ray Clients.
