UC Berkeley's AMPLab Adds Sponsor for Big Data Projects
The University of California, Berkeley's AMPLab, a collaborative research effort that aims to develop analytics tools for big data, has picked up a new private sponsor.
The sponsor, Guavus, is working to integrate Spark, Shark and Mesos, all developed at AMPLab, into its Reflex operational intelligence platform.
Spark is an open-source cluster computing system designed to make data analytics programs fast to write and run. "Shark is a new data analysis system that marries query processing with complex analytics on large clusters," according to information on the AMPLab site, and "Mesos is a cluster manager that provides efficient resource isolation and sharing across distributed applications."
"We are thrilled to be partnering with Guavus. Their overall support of AMPLab is significant to our goal of building a new generation of data analytics software," said Ion Stoica, co-director of AMPLab of UC Berkeley Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. "We are excited to have an industry leader, who is passionate about the future of open source, foster our research and projects."
