Updated Captioning System Works with Pre-Recorded Video

Later this week, a broadcast technology company will introduce an updated version of its captioning technology to address the captioning of pre-recorded content. ENCO will be launching release 2 of its enCaption3 automated closed captioning system at IBC2016 in Amsterdam. This new edition features improvements in the representation of voice, spelling and punctuation for improved transcription accuracy.

When used in a "live" environment, according to the company, captions are delivered as a spoken stream of text.

A large share of live captioning is used for news production, according to General Manager Ken Frommert. "But there remains a significant need for automated solutions to caption other valuable content such as movies, reruns and non-live programming."

The release of enCaption3R2, he said, would provide an option for pre-recorded content caption that didn't involve "outsourcing it to a company for manual production that takes days or wasting valuable internal resources on a very tedious and time-consuming project."

One use case Frommert specifically referenced was the educational institution that might have "20,000 videos they want to put online." Before that can happen, he noted, captioning should be put in place to adhere to Section 508 accessibility rules. "The costs and labor of doing that manually are enormous. enCaption3R2 solves the problem of achieving such a goal in a timely and compliant manner."
