PT Students in Internet Cheating Ring
The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) said it uncovered
widespread Internet cheating by physical therapy students preparing to take
the National Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE). The organization said students
were conducting illicit sharing of recalled or memorized exam questions via
the Internet, and were using, among other sites, the discussion forum of International
Educational Resources, Inc. (IER), an exam preparation vendor, to do it. FSBPT
said is conducting an investigation, including identifying individual students
who have participated in the cheating.

Cal Poly Pomona Unveils Rainforest Sim
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and Rain Bird Corp., an irrigation
equipment manufacturer, said they would open a rainforest simulation and learning
center located on the university's campus in Pomona, California. Five years
in the making, the 3,500 sq. ft. BioTrek research and education facility consists
of three learning centers, including the Rain Bird Rainforest Learning Center,
an Ethnobotany Learning Center and an Aquatic Biology Learning Center, all of
which provide a "hands-on" learning experience for students to explore the diversity
of a tropical rainforest as well as terrestrial and aquatic habitats of California
and the tropics. "BioTrek is a new approach to helping people learn about the
ecological processes and cultural importance of rainforests and other habitats,"
said Don Straney, dean of the College of Science at Cal Poly Pomona.

Foundation Offers $200K to Pa. Colleges
The Verizon Foundation invited community colleges located within the company's
Pennsylvania service territory with a strong focus on technology and workforce
development to compete for $200,000 in grants. The foundation is seeking grant
applications for innovative projects that use technology to foster workforce
development in Pennsylvania. Verizon said it will give strong preference to
projects that emphasize how innovative uses of technology can benefit students
and teachers, have a widespread impact in the community; demonstrate partnerships
to help improve efficiency; and define measurable results. "The explosive growth
of technology is dramatically changing the way we learn and the way companies
do business," said Daniel J. Whelan, president of Verizon Pennsylvania. "This
unique opportunity gives our community colleges incentives to embrace technology
to educate individuals and prepare them for the work place of tomorrow."
