Drew University Maintains High E-Campus Marks

New Jersey’s Drew University is providing IBM ThinkPad
R40 notebooks to all incoming students this year; marking
20 consecutive years it has provided computer support
for its students. "Incorporating notebook technology
into their class curriculum and everyday lives helps
our students develop skills that will enhance their
educational and professional development," said Alan
Candiotti, assistant vice president of university
technology. The Princeton Review recently ranked the
school 12th among the 25 most connected college
campuses in the United States. Criteria included
wireless access on campus, breadth of the computer
science curriculum, and student/computer ratio.

Chicago Area Online University Boosts Local Economy

AIU Online, the distance education component of American
InterContinental University, is bucking the unemployment
trend by adding jobs to the local economy. The commercial
university system, which operates 78 campuses in the
U.S., Europe, and the United Arab Emirates, has hired
and trained over 500 residents and 100 adjunct faculties
in the Chicago area since Jan. of this year. AIU Online
is part of the Career Education Corporation (CEC), one
of the largest of for-profit higher education service
providers. AIU Online says its student population has
grown to 9,300 in the last two years.

Beijing University to Assist Wearable Computing Developer

Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and
Fairfax, Va.-based Xybernaut Corp., will conduct joint
research and development of mobile and wearable computing
devices and software for the Chinese market. The two
partners said they would establish a National Center of
Competence for Wearable Technology for research and
development of wearable technologies throughout the
People’s Republic of China. Xybernaut develops
wearable/mobile computing hardware and software as well
as assistive technology.

The joint programs will allow students, faculty and
interested third parties to have access to leading
mobile/wearable technologies. Curricula will relate to
computation, communications, information processing,
project and change management and man-machine interface,
as well as math, physics, electronics and engineering.
MIT OpenCourseWare Wins InfoWorld 100 Award
MIT’s OpenCourseWare initiative to make curricular
materials of 500 courses available over the Internet
received an award from InfoWorld magazine as one of 100
organizations that made the best use of technology to
enhance their business or organization. MIT OCW is one
of the largest Microsoft content management implementations
ever deployed, providing a scalable base for managing
up to one million resources. Sapient Corp. helped
develop the solution.

Amazon,, Form Marketing Alliance is working with, a Virginia
company that offers 20,000 licensed college products
from 380 colleges and universities, to expand the
eCommerce giant’s online product selection. Amazon
takes the orders, d'es credit card processing and
passes the order details electronically to BuyCollegeStuff
to process and arrange shipment. BuyCollege itself
holds no inventory in the process. The products are
being carried in Amazon’s Fan Shop, which caters to
sports fans.
