CT 2011, Day 1: Technology News from the Show Floor

At the Campus Technology 2011 conference, happening this week in Boston, Cengage Learning and Moodlerooms (booth 664) announced a partnership that will allow the Moodle-based joule learning management system to interoperate with Cengage's educational technologies. Cengage is the maker of such learning tools as Course360, CourseMate, and CourseMaster. Among other things, the partnership will result in support for single sign-on between the companies' technologies, integration of Cengage digital media within joule, and the addition of joule's collaborative tools within Cengage apps. Technology integrator Carousel Industries (booth 844) reported that it will conduct several interactive demonstrations on the show floor July 26 and 27, including solutions in the areas of unified communications, data security, and audiovisual technologies. Included in the lineup will be demonstrations of Aruba Mobile Device Access Control, a WiFI and helpdesk solution designed to help IT departments on campus support bring-your-own-technology initiatives; Polycom RMX Bridge, a unified communications solution; and the Polycom HDX 4000 and HDX 8000 series of conferencing and collaboration systems. Carousel is accepting appointments. Gridstore (booth 757) will showcase its scale-out network-attached storage solutions for small and medium-sized businesses July 25-28. Gridstore's storage platform includes a virtual controller and management console and is designed to allow organizations to add storage as they grow to avoid paying for unnecessary capacity. Dot Hill Systems (booth 840), Campus Technology 2011 sponsor and provider of unified virtual storage and SAN storage solutions will showcase its AssuredSAN 2002 and 3000 Series RAID systems, among others. Dot Hill's VMWare- and Microsoft-certified storage systems are designed to help IT departments manage educational applications including distance learning, video production, research, and administrative support. Brescia University's Director of Information Technology Jack Wilson and Network Administrator Chris Ford "will discuss the advantages of a unified policy solution to address security for campus and housing network access, Bring Your Own Device initiatives, and compliance requirements," according to information released by Avenda Systems. During the session, to be held July 28 at 9:45 EDT, Wilson and Ford will explain how Brescia, an Avenda customer, deployed differentiated role-based access security, malware protection, management and use of peer-to-peer applications, and tips for load balancing wireless and wired bandwidth usage. LoudCloud Systems (booth 436) will be presenting with Grand Canyon University CIO Joe Mildenhall July 27 at 2:30 EDT.  LoudCloud's University Ecosystem, delivered via the software-as-a-service model, is a learning management system featuring collaborative and adaptive learning technologies, real-time student progress tracking, analytics management, and an e-reader platform. Grand Canyon University recently announced their adoption of LoudCloud University Ecosystem as reported by Campus Technology last week. Hitachi ID Systems (booth 758) will showcase their identity and access management software July 26 and 27. Hitachis ID software, designed to lower IT costs, streamline service, and facilitate regulatory compliance, includes Privileged Access Manager, Password Manager, and Identity Manager. Executive Vice President of Academic Relations for GoingOn Networks (booth 833) Kurt Ackman will give a presentation describing "GoingOn’s Academic Engagement Network and how it creates an ecosystem that supports and enriches the academic life that institutions of higher education deliver," according to information released by the company. The session, “Enriching the Student Experience through an Academic Life Ecosystem,” is scheduled for 2:00 EDT July 27 in the Technology Classroom in the Exhibit Hall Presentation Theater. Sonic Foundry (booth 460), a platinum-level Campus Technology 2011 sponsor, will be recording several conference tracks with their Mediasite webcasting platform. Among the sessions to be webcast and available for on-demand viewing are the "Conversation with the Future" interactive talks. These 90-minute-long discussions, led by Vice President of Research and Special Initiatives at Google Alfred Spector, and Cameron Evans, national and chief technology officer at Microsoft Corporation, will focus on the trends that will affect higher education IT in the coming years.
