University of Pittsburgh Partners with AWS on Cloud Innovation Center

The University of Pittsburgh is teaming up with Amazon Web Services to establish a new Cloud Innovation Center focused on health sciences and sports analytics. The project aims to "leverage data, analytics, and breakthroughs in artificial intelligence to enhance the university's health sciences programs and athletics department, while offering students opportunities for real-world experience through internships working with industry experts," according to a news announcement.

Tasked with developing cutting-edge application to address the latest challenges in healthcare and sports, the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences and Sports Analytics Cloud Innovation Center will utilize AWS's suite of machine learning and AI services, including Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock, to advance research and drive data-informed decision-making, as well as offer students opportunities to work on real-world data-focused challenges. Students will also gain access to AWS training, "building open source technical prototypes and proofs of concept to drive scalable impact through industry adoption," the announcement said.

"This partnership with AWS represents Pitt Health Sciences' commitment to pushing the boundaries of data and AI applications across our six schools," said Anantha Shekhar, senior vice chancellor for the Health Sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, in a statement. "By integrating cutting-edge technology with our vast research capabilities, we will drive transformative solutions that improve health outcomes and accelerate medical breakthroughs."

"We're eager to team up with AWS to enhance the dynamic environment at Pitt where innovation thrives," commented Mark D. Henderson, vice chancellor and CIO at the university. "The Cloud Innovation Center will connect cutting-edge technology with real-world solutions to support our researchers' efforts in health sciences, equip our students with the skills they need for an AI-driven future, and enhance the performance of our sports programs and athletes."

"Amazon Web Services is excited to launch the Cloud Innovation Center at University of Pittsburgh. AWS and Pitt share a vision of using generative AI and machine learning to improve learning opportunities and health outcomes, enhance the future of athletics, and advance the responsible use of emerging technologies at a collegiate level and in the broader research community," said Dominic Delmolino, vice president, Worldwide Public Sector Technology and Innovation at Amazon Web Services. "This collaboration will accelerate the development of AI solutions that can have a real-world impact on the health sciences and sports industries."
