UMassOnline Revenues, Enrollments Up, Up, Up
UMassOnline, the University of Massachusetts's Web-based
learning division, announced that online education program
revenues and enrollments grew 40 percent and 33 percent,
respectively, in 2003. Revenues from the combined online
programs at the university exceeded $11 million, up from
$7.8 million in 2002, while enrollments reached 13,375,
up from 10,039 in 2002. More than 90 percent of the
revenues are retained by the UMass campuses to support
education and research programs.
The school attributes its rapid growth to the continued
addition of new online programs that serve community needs,
high levels of online student satisfaction, and its
recognition in the national distance learning market due
to factors such as winning several national distance
learning awards.
"Distance learning is critical to the future of UMass and
all of higher education," UMass interim President Jack M.
Wilson said. "Without it, we cannot adequately serve
students who live far from our campuses or whose work and
family lives make traditional higher education an
unattainable goal. Also, at a time when we are expected
to do more with less state funding, UMassOnline is
mobilizing our five campuses to create entrepreneurial
revenue-generating online programs, multi-campus
collaborations, innovative faculty training, increased
national visibility and significant cost savings for the
university."

Peking U., U.S. Firm, to Test Chinese Computer Chips
Agilent Technologies Inc. is collaborating with Peking
University’s Microprocessor Research and Development
Center (MPRC) to develop a production test solution for
the Chinese Unity-863 system-on-a-chip (SOC) central
processor on the Agilent 93000 SOC Series tester. The
Unity-863, one of China's leading domestically developed
CPUs, is used for high-speed computing and communications
applications.
"The Unity-863 has been embedded with high-end
design-for-test (DFT) technologies to serve sophisticated
testing requirements," said Cheng Xu, director of MPRC.
"The Agilent 93000 SOC Series tester is widely recognized
as a leader in the DFT arena, and has a track record of
success in China. Agilent's comprehensive technology
solution, along with its professional service and support
team, has contributed greatly to the success of the
Unity-863 SOC CPU volume production test."

U. Oklahoma CIO Pleased with Online Help Solution
University of Oklahoma has installed online help and
customer support software to help students, faculty and
staff find answers to questions ranging from online
enrollment to classroom facilities, to where to find the
latest anti-virus software. The school is using Answer
Suite from Skywire Software, which the company says
consists of knowledge management, Web self-service, and
case management. UO chief information officer Dennis
Aebersold said the software has enabled his department
“to focus our knowledge and expertise in one convenient
and easily accessible knowledge base.”

Online Guide for Texas Private Colleges Gets Face Lift
The TexasMentor Website, which supplies information on the
40 institutions that make up the Independent Colleges and
Universities of Texas (ICUT), Inc., has a simplified
redesign that caters to the steady rise in user activity
on the site. Funded by Texas Guaranteed (TG) and operated
by XAP Inc., the site was the gateway for a 40 percent
increase in the number of online applications submitted
to the schools over the number of online applications for
all of 2002. During its first month in operation in Feb.,
1999, the total number of student visitors to the site was
245, compared to the 30,000-a-month student users now.

Caltech Opens Science Institute for Gifted High Schoolers
The Virginia-based Center for Excellence in Education
(CEE) and Caltech inaugurated the Research Science Institute
(RSI), a six-week summer program for academically talented
high school science students.
The RSI at Caltech furthers the Center's mission of nurturing
careers of leadership and excellence in science and technology
and promoting international understanding among future
leaders. The program at Caltech complements the Research
Science Institute at MIT, which has been collaboratively
sponsored by CEE and MIT for the past 11 years.
RSI alumni go on to garner top prizes in science competitions.
In 2003, alumni took the top prize of $100,000 scholarship
awards in both the Intel Science Talent Search and the
Siemens-Westinghouse competition.
