NEW AMX CHAIRMAN. Control system vendor AMX has named Robert Fealy nonexecutive chairman of its board of directors. Fealy replaces Craig Duchossois, who remains on the board.

TO COLUBRIS. Colubris Networks, a provider of wireless LAN solutions, has appointed Rob Scott as president and CEO. Most recently, Scott was president and CEO of Xelor Software, a provider of IP telephony and VoIP service quality management.

VIRTUAL EXPERIMENTATION. Enterprise eLearning software provider Angel Learning, in conjunction with the Second Life Educators community (SLED), has unveiled a new island in Second Life, dedicated to educational experimentation. Educators and learners can access the Angel Learning Island for free, to practice navigating and communicating in the 3D virtual world. A SLED Sandbox area provides information for instructional designers and educators on the basic principles of building objects in Second Life. Read more here.

GATEWAY GOES 1-TO-1. PC vendor Gateway has announced a new one-to-one computing solution for the education market, designed to improve academic performance and promote student engagement and attendance. The solution comprises a portfolio of products and services: consulting, needs assessment, professional development, classroom management software, standards-based curriculum software, hardware, implementation, and ongoing support.

ON-DEMAND BI SOFTWARE. SAS, a provider of business intelligence and analytical software and services, has launched SAS OnDemand for Academics, a service that provides educators with free access (with online registration) to SAS data analysis software, allowing them to integrate SAS into a curriculum without a university/ SAS contract being in place. Students can also access the software for a nominal fee, based on the selected service length (the cost of a semester's use is about the same as a textbook).

TO INFOCOMM! With more than 450,000 square feet of expo space, professional audiovisual show InfoComm '07 opens June 15 in Anaheim, CA. The seven-day conference and expo will feature more than 800 exhibitors--presenting an array of professional audio, digital signage, display, conferencing lighting, control system, and signal distribution technologies--visited by 28,000 commercial AV professionals, technology managers, CIOs, and procurement personnel from 80 countries around the world.

TEXTBOOK TO GO. Thomson Higher Education, a provider of higher ed textbooks, software, and internet materials, has launched MKTG, a multimedia marketing textbook. The new format offers online and cell phone quizzes, audio/ MP3 downloads, and printable flashcards, enabling on-the-go learning.

MANAGING SECURITY DATA. Michigan State University is deploying CrossTec's Activeworx Security Center in one of the school's principal data centers. The security management solution collects log files from network applications (such as firewalls, virus detection systems, and vulnerability assessment tools), and places the information into a single database, organizing security events for simplified analysis to help alert security personnel respond to potential threats.
