Utah Names New CIO, Streamlines IT Across Campus

The University of Utah named Stephen Hess its top information technology executive. Hess, who was the school's associate academic vice president for information technology, will become chief information officer and preside over a new, unified IT department.

Offices including the Administrative Computing Services office, the Center for High Performance Computing, the Office Information Technology, Media Solutions, Instructional Media Services, and the Utah Education Network will be folded into the unified department.

Hess told the campus newspaper Daily Utah Chronicle that the shift will likely affect most campus services, from how syllabi are distributed to how parking passes are paid for.

"I can call up just about anything else online," he said. "Why not pay for parking fees, tickets to athletic events or tuition? It would certainly be easier for students and much more efficient than having students sitting at a window," Hess said.

"It is a very intensive job," he added. "We are responsible for introducing into education a whole new way to do business."
