HDS CEO. Hitachi Data Systems has appointed Minoru Kosuge as CEO. Kosuge was the chief architect of the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform, and most recently served as president of Hitachi’s Disk Array Systems Division in Japan. The company also announced the promotion of Jack Domme from executive VP/Global Solutions Strategy and Development, to COO.

NAMED IAIDQ PREZ. Lisa Flint-Dodson, data integration product manager for SAS, has been named president of the International Association for Information and Data Quality, a nonprofit, vendor-neutral professional society of individuals passionate about improving information and data quality.

LEADING SAKAI. The Sakai Foundation has named Michael Korcuska as executive director. Korcuska most recently served as COO of ELT, a provider of eLearning programs for workplace compliance training.

MITSUBISHI SVP. Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America’s Presentation Products Division has appointed Shoichi Suwa as senior VP and general manager of Professional Visual Systems. Suwa joined Mitsubishi in 1983, and most recently served as senior manager of sales and marketing for the company’s monitor products in Japan.

EMERGENCY ALERT HELP. Earlier this year, Omvox Telecom awarded more than $500,000 in grants to provide 40-plus higher ed institutions with its Alertify mass alerting and notification system at no cost. The company is now offering special pricing for colleges and universities, until July 31 (for more information, go here). Alertify enables institutions to instantly send a message (audio or text) to members of the campus community, via e-mail, phone, and/or text message.

INTEGRATED ALERTS. Omnilert, maker of the mass notification system e2Campus, has partnered with Visix, to integrate e2Campus technology into Visix’s digital signage systems. The technology integration will allow campus officials to instantly and simultaneously push an urgent message to the campus website, all digital visual displays around campus, and to the cell phones, e-mail accounts, and RSS readers of the entire campus community.

APPLE ROLLS OUT iTUNES U. Apple has announced the launch of iTunes U, a dedicated area within the iTunes Store that features free content provided by colleges and universities such as Stanford University (CA), UC-Berkeley, Duke University (NC), and MIT. Apple began collaborating with pilot partner schools more than a year ago to develop the service; now, everything from course lectures, language lessons, and lab demonstrations, to sports highlights and campus tours can be accessed for free by the public. PEARSON TO ACQUIRE eCOLLEGE. Education and information company Pearson has agreed to acquire eLearning technology and service provider eCollege. According to company representatives, Pearson expects the acquisition to strengthen its ability to provide customers with a full range of services across content, curriculum development, formative assessment and homework technologies, and outsourced solutions.

WEBSENSE TO ACQUIRE SURFCONTROL. Web security and filtering software company Websense has announced that its subsidiary, Websense SC Operations Limited, has offered to acquire SurfControl, a provider of on-demand and software-based web and e-mail security solutions. Websense CFO Doug Wride has been named president, and has been tasked with closing and then leading the integration of SurfControl. The company plans to support SurfControl’s layered software web security solutions at least through 2010.
