Siemon Addresses Physical Layer Security with Fiber Optic Lock

Siemon, a company that produces network cabling and related hardware, has released a line of locks specifically to prevent unauthorized access to unused fiber optic network ports.

The LockIT LC adapter lock, the newest addition to the company's LockIT product line, is designed to provide physical layer security to the network. The device snaps into an industry-standard LC port to block cord access and prevent tampering. Removable with a specially designed key, the lock fits flush within the port, providing unhindered access to adjacent ports. It's also color-coded to allow network personnel to be able to identify locked ports quickly.

Siemon's port security family also includes a tamper-proof RJ-45 outlet lock and lockable patch cords to prevent somebody from disconnecting the cabling. All of the products use the same universal key.

Tony Veatch, the company's director of product management, said the company has seen interest in the security devices particularly for use in public areas such as conference rooms and classrooms.
