Red Hat Debuts Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform for OpenStack-Powered Clouds

Red Hat has launched two new products designed to help organizations build private or public cloud environments or implement infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solutions.

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform provides a foundation for scalable and secure private or public clouds, according to the company.

Components of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform include:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, which can run OpenStack workload servers, including compute, storage, and controller nodes, and can host guest virtual machines; and
  • Red Hat OpenStack, which provides platform optimized for and integrated with Red Hat Enterprise Linux for developing managing private or public clouds.

According to the company, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform features a predictable, stable lifecycle; SELinux military-grade security; and certified partners for compute, storage, networking, ISV software, and deployment and customization services.

The Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure is designed to help organizations build and manage a private cloud IaaS based on data center virtualization and management technologies for traditional workloads. It also provides an on-ramp to a public-cloud-like infrastructure based on Red Hat OpenStack.

Components of Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure include:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for data center virtualization;
  • Red Hat CloudForms, which is an open hybrid cloud management solution that enables organizations to deploy, monitor, and manage cloud services across virtualization solutions, hypervisors, and platforms;
  • Red Hat OpenStack, which is a scalable IaaS solution that provides an enterprise-ready private cloud foundation; and
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, which serves as the operating system for guest virtual machines running on the OpenStack compute nodes.

The Red Hat Enterprise OpenStack Platform and Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure will be available by subscription in July 2013.

Other announcements from Red Hat include:

  • A new Open IaaS Architecture Service to help organization get started building and operating cloud IaaS;
  • The Red Hat Certified Solution Marketplace, where Red Hat customers can find technologies and solutions certified with Red Hat OpenStack and other Red Hat open hybrid cloud products, including over 500 products from companies such as Cisco, Dell, HP, and IBM; and
  • Collaboration with Mirantis, an OpenStack systems integrator, to optimize Mirantis' Fuel tools for deployment of Red Hat OpenStack and to deliver OpenStack implementation and integration services to joint customers.

The Red Hat Certified Solution Marketplace will become generally available in the fall of 2013.

Red Hat also released Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.2, an end-to-end, open source virtualization infrastructure designed for enterprise users and a key component of the Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure.

New features in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.2 include:

  • Fully supported Storage Live Migration, so virtual machine images can be moved across storage domains without service disruption;
  • Support for the latest industry-standard processors from Intel and AMD, including the Intel Haswell series and AMD Opteron G5 processors;
  • Improved storage management, networking management, fencing and power management, Spice console enhancements, logging, and monitoring; and
  • A new third-party plugin framework to integrate features and actions directly into the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization management user interface.

According to Red Hat, the company is already working with NetApp, Symantec, and Insight Control from HP to integrate their high availability and disaster recovery solutions with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization through the new plug-in framework.
