Seagate Debuts Kinetic Open Storage Platform

Seagate Technology has launched a 2.3 petabyte storage system of hard drives connected over Ethernet.

The Seagate Kinetic Open Storage platform consists of regular hard drives integrated with the company's new open-source key/value API (application programming interface) and Ethernet connectivity. Seagate's Kinetic drives interface directly with the applications, so they enable organizations to eliminate the entire storage tier of their data center architecture.

Seagate designed the Kinetic Open Storage platform to simplify the data management and improve the performance and scalability of cloud infrastructures while reducing the total cost of ownership. By eliminating the storage tier from the architecture, organizations can save money on acquisition, deployment, and support of hyperscale storage infrastructures, as well as reduced power and cooling costs, according to the company.

Kinetic's key/value API enables applications to communicate directly with the storage device. The API will be open sourced, so developers will be able to use it to build new solutions to suit the needs of their data center. According to information on Seagate's site, developers will be able to use the key/value API to take direct advantage of drive-specific features and capabilities and rapidly deploy those devices in any stack.
