Midland College To Save $4.4 Million with Efficiency Upgrades, Cloud Computing

Midland College has completed sustainability upgrades, including efforts to improve IT efficiency, projected to save $4.4 million in energy and operational expenses over the course of 15 years.

Midland partnered with OpTerra Energy Services for the multi-phase project, which was launched in 2012. "Working closely with college leadership, a team of Texas-based OpTerra engineers designed and delivered an energy savings plan based on current infrastructure needs and long-term projected growth," according to a news release. "Through OpTerra's comprehensive implementation approach, Midland College was able to improve interior and exterior lighting with Light Emitting Diode (LED) retrofits and address building envelope and temperature control issues for the classrooms and residence halls."

The college and OpTerra also virtualized 32 existing physical servers to reduce costs and improve IT service.

"This significant effort will make us more labor efficient as well as more energy efficient while providing improved lighting and visibility," said Dennis Sever, vice president of information technology and facilities at Midland College, in a prepared statement.
