Lessons To Explore Cybersecurity Strategy and Tactics

An instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology will be creating two units on strategic thinking and tactics for use in cybersecurity classes, thanks to a grant from Intel. Bo Yuan, an associate professor and chair of RIT's Department of Computing Security, received $25,000 from the company's higher education program to develop lecture materials, lab activities and instructions. The resource, which will be made available to other institutions, is expected to be done in spring 2017.

The funding will be used to acquire new servers for hosting a computer network where upper-level and graduate students can run labs and experiment with cybersecurity attack and defense exercises.

"In high level cybersecurity attacks and defenses, knowledge, skills and tools are not always enough to ensure a mission success," said Yuan in a press release. "A lot of cyberattacks are about deception — and professionals need to be more vigilant and aware that these strategies might be played against them."

The computing security department is part of the institution's College of Computing and Information Sciences.
