Internet2 Adds Password Manager to Recommended Services

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) recommended the inclusion of the software it uses to maintain user security for inclusion in Internet2's products and services guide. Now institutions and other organizations that participate in the higher education advanced technology community can receive "standard terms" when they want to license software from Keeper Security.

The company's flagship platform, Keeper, provides user password management and encrypted digital file storage. Instead of logging in to each application with a unique password, the user can enter passwords into Keeper, which maintains those and fills them in for users from any device, on any site and in any program. Records are automatically synced across all devices. The software can also generate random passwords and keep those safe.

The service is SOC 2-certified and uses 256-bit AES encryption to safeguard information. Users that access their mobile devices with a biometric login can use the fingerprint scanner to access the Keeper "vault." Nobody, including the company, has access to the data being protected.

"UAB is committed to protecting its most precious resource: our people. Keeper gives us that ability," said university CIO and Vice President Curtis Carver, in a statement. "It empowers UAB digital citizens to generate, retain and use unique strong passwords on a plethora of devices as well as implement enterprise security management with surprising ease."

Besides UAB, other institutions that run the program include the University of Iowa and Ohio State.
