OpenAI Adds Interactive Math and Science Learning Tools to ChatGPT

A new ChatGPT feature guides learners through math and science topics by showing how formulas, variables, and relationships behave in real time. The interactive visualizations, included across all subscription plans globally, are now available for more than 70 core math and science concepts, initially targeted to high school and college-level learners.

When a user asks ChatGPT about a particular concept, the tool can provide both an explanation and an interactive visual module where "users can adjust variables, manipulate formulas, and instantly see how those changes affect graphs and outcomes," OpenAI explained in a company blog post.

"What stands out is how strongly this feature emphasizes conceptual understanding," said Anjini Grover, a high school mathematics teacher quoted by the OpenAI blog post. "When learning math, understanding why something works and how ideas connect helps concepts stick long term. I especially appreciate how it doesn't stop at the original question but actively prompts you to extend thinking and explore deeper connections."

"Research suggests that visual, interaction-based learning can lead to stronger conceptual understanding than traditional instruction for many students," OpenAI noted. "When learners can manipulate variables and instantly see the effects, they may be better able to internalize the relationships behind mathematical and scientific concepts."

OpenAI plans to expand its interactive learning features to other subjects and "continue building tools that strengthen learning with ChatGPT," the company said.
