Macworld Expo: SATABeast Xi Delivers 42 TB Storage for Xserve

At the Macworld Conference & Expo being held this week in San Francisco, Nexsan is debuting a new high-density storage solution for Apple's Xserve and Mac Pro systems. Dubbed the SATABeast Xi, the 4U rackmount system, which is expected to ship in mid-March, will offer up to 42 TB of storage and features that allow it to improve energy efficiency.

The SATABeast Xi offers dual-function Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity for Apple Mac and Xserve systems with support for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, as well as mixed-computing environments. It's targeted toward high-bandwidth applications, such as HD video editing, as well as business continuity applications, such as disk to disk backups.

For energy efficiency, the systems use AutoMAID ("Massive Array of Idle Disks") technology, which allows SATABeast to set its disks to idle mode to conserve energy while also keeping them ready for "near-instantaneous" access to data.

SATABeast Xi is expected to ship March 15 starting at about $1,200 per TB, including software licensing. Final pricing was not available at press time. The systems will be available only through VARs.
