Quark Gives Teachers a Free Ride
Quark is making its recently released QuarkXPress 9 available to faculty members free for a limited time.
QuarkXPress is a design and page layout application that's been used widely in the print publishing industry. More recently, it's adopted technologies to help build publications for online and mobile reader consumption.
With the new release late last month, Quark has expanded further into digital publishing with the addition of several new features to support electronic book readers, including App Studio for QuarkXPress, which lets users create iPad apps using familiar tools and without manual coding; new support for exporting to the ePub format (compatible with a wide range of e-book readers); and the new ability to develop interactive, graphics-intensive publications for the Blio eReader and submit them to the Blio Bookstore.
Through Quark's new Teacher-Try-It Program, available now through Nov. 1, instructors in K-12 schools and higher education institutions in the United States and Canada can receive a free one-year license to the software. The Education Edition of QuarkXPress normally runs $199. The full retail version sells for $799.
According to Quark, the program is aimed at instructors who teach topics related to creative production, including journalism, new media, graphic design, development, arts, and interactive and print media. Teachers in other disciplines will also be considered for the free license, Quark indicated.
