Red Hat OpenShift Now Supports Java Enterprise Edition 6

Red Hat has announced support for Java Enterprise Edition (EE) 6 on its OpenShift platform-as-a-service (PaaS).

OpenShift is a free PaaS for deploying and managing Java, PHP, Ruby, Python, Perl, and other applications in the cloud. OpenShift is intended to simplify application development by enabling developers to focus on coding while the OpenShift PaaS looks after stack setup, maintenance, and operational concerns.

OpenShift support for Java EE 6 is powered by JBoss Application Server 7, an open source project by the JBoss Community. JBoss Application Server 7 forms the core of JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 6, which will be available in early 2012.

Key features of OpenShift with JBoss Application Server include:

  • Improved scaling, management, and monitoring of Java EE in the cloud;
  • Cloud-ready architecture with a lightweight footprint and dynamic container model to support multi-core processing and multi-tenancy;
  • Java EE 6 Content and Dependency Injection (CDI), a standards-based programming framework for building dynamic applications; and
  • Eventing support and typing through CDI.

"While developers and enterprises have long been interested in the time to market advantages offered by PaaS platforms, the difficulty of migrating existing applications to incompatible frameworks has slowed adoption," said Stephen O'Grady, principal analyst and co-founder of RedMonk. "With EE6 available by integrating the JBoss application server technology, Red Hat's OpenShift platform is aimed at allowing enterprises to transition their existing Java EE applications and skills to the cloud with zero friction."
